Community Owned Rural Sanitation Schemes

img-13
Contrary to other sanitation schemes, Grassroots Pakistan works on the concept of component sharing; which clearly allocates the responsibility of services between the community and the other stakeholder (independent donor, government, or Grassroots Pakistan). With community contributions approaching 50% of the total cost of the scheme, allocating responsibility is paramount, as it creates a sense of ownership, and ensures proper maintenance.

cleanwater

Grassroots Pakistan has worked in the designing and installation of low-cost Bio Sand Filters in localities that have mild to moderately contaminated water. Constructed through a component-sharing approach, 145 applications were filed by communities in the pilot phase, out of which only 31 were found to have a sufficient, yet treatable level of contamination.
